classic art — contemporary vision

On April 21, 1996, after an extensive architectural restoration under the supervision of Michigan Opera Theatre general director Dr. David DiChiera, the Detroit Opera House reopened with a star-studded gala featuring Luciano Pavarotti.

To celebrate the grand and successful reopening of the historic, Italian Renaissance style opera house,  the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan commissioned a painting to be unveiled as the inaugural work of art in a public collection that would go on permanent display there.

Italian artist, Carla Carli Mazzucato, whose earlier commissioned works had already been installed in the Church of Corpus Domini in Bolzano, Italy, was happy to accept the new commission, and on June 18, 1999, her original, oil painting, "Evening at the Opera" was unveiled during a spectacular gala event and dinner at the Detroit Opera House at 1526 Broadway Street in Detroit.

Here is a video clip of the event titled "Italian Interlude."
